They do at at least one point (close to the climax of the first arc, I think?), but I think you are completely correct, yes.

Lord. The entire reason they had that word slapped on them was because they were meant to be owned by brothers, wasn’t it. Even this is an artifact of their subjugation, this world is a nightmare. They have to endure so much already, and now, when they inevitably begin to grow closer after all this abuse from an inexplicably hostile world they don’t fully understand, they’re only going to come up against yet more prejudice from humans, but this time it’s because of the relationship they had slapped on them completely arbitrarily as one of their marks of ownership. This is too much.
